Course Overview

The British Canoeing Advanced White Water Kayak Coach award enables you to coach other paddlers to develop their performance on advanced white water (grade 4). From continuous rapids, to steep drops and slides, an advanced white water coach will be able to work out the key development needs of the paddlers they are coaching and work with them to develop their performance.

Training

Developing technical understanding and analysing body movement is what we do best. Over the two days we’ll help you to use these skills to develop your coaching on advanced white water.

The first day will be spent breaking down paddling in advanced white water, helping you to develop precise pictures of tactics and techniques so you have criteria to assess your students potential for development. We will share tips and work with you to facilitate your coaching development and cover using video analysis as a positive learning tool for your clients.

We will cover fundamentals of Advanced White Water coaching such as; ensuring students have their tactics and river reading sorted; checking that they can build and maintain blade pressure to effectively drive their boat; developing stroke timing and blade placement; using late/lazy ferries to see the lip; working on students ability to carry lateral momentum; launching the boat effectively and perfecting boofing.

We’ll bring in real students for you to coach on the second day to put theory into practice and allow you to play with new ideas and gain feedback to help guide your future development as a coach.

There is the opportunity for ongoing mentorship and the possibility of observing other courses delivered by Kinetic Paddlesports in advanced white water environments. Please contact us for further details regarding this.

Assessment

We run both scheduled assessments and bespoke on demand assessments.

We strongly believe assessments should be a learning experience and we’ll work with you to ensure the assessment fits you.

You can either bring your own group to coach, which could be a continuation from previous sessions , or we can arrange a new group for you to coach for the day.

Prior to the day you’ll have sent us your discussion task from previous coaching sessions - were more than happy to help with this process.

You’ll deliver a coaching session that meets the needs of the group you are coaching in an advanced (grade 4) environment.

See assessment guidance and assessment day pack here.
